Dolmen.gif (20212 bytes)Leighlinbridge is situated in the county of Carlow, Irish translation ~ Ceatharlach (The Four Lakes) in the Provence of Leinster(South East).   Ceatharlach formed part of the medieval lord-ship of leinster.  Historic relics include megalithic tombs, monastic settlements and Norman castles.  With its narrow, twisting streets that rise and fall with the ancient lie of the land, jagged castle ruins overlooking a 14th century bridge, grey limestone malthouses and a beauty unique to its location lies the little town of Leighlinbridge intimately situated along the river Barrow and 1km off the N-9 opens a scene of an earlier Ireland to the visitor.  The town itself has many unique features but the focal point of the town has to be its valerian bearded bridge, built in 1320 by Maurice Jakis, which is said to be one of the oldest functioning bridges in Europe.   Just off the bridge lies the castle ruins of Ireland's first Carmelite monastery, built in 1272.

All that remains of this Fort of the Kings is a mound enveloped by the trees.  At the Northern entrance to the town is a modern sculptured throne placed on a landscaped mound, in respect to the Ancient Seat of the Kings of the Southeast.

The Leighlin district has produced more than its share of famous people. The forebearers of the Great Walt Disney whom became a world success in 1928 with "Steamboat Willie" farmed nearby and are buried at Clonmelsh.  Also from the Leighlinbridge area was the daring Captain Myles Keogh, second in command to General George Custer, who died at the battle of little Big Horn in 1876. (1840 - 1876).  Cardinal Patrick Moran 1830-1911, Born on the premises of The Lord Bagenal Inn,   was Archbishop of Sydney and Australia's first Cardinal.; John Tyndall 1820-1893, Educationalist, scientist, mountaineer and successor to Michael Faraday as Superintendent of the Royal Institution of London.  Leighlin is also the birth place of the ancestors of Canada's former Prime Minister, Brian Mulroney.; William J. Ounihan, financial controller to the world trade fare held in Chicago in 1893 was also a native of Leighlinbridge.

Stlazerians.gif (18774 bytes)About 1.5Km away from Leighlinbridge is the little village of Old Leighlin.  Old Leighlin is most noted for it's Cathedral.  Early in the seventh century St. Gobban founded a monastery at Old Leighlin where in 630 A.D. a Synod was held to deliberate on the time for the holding of Easter. The Roman & the Celtic churches followed different systems.  The Synod decided in favour of the Roman system and St. Laserian, who succeeded Gobban as abbot in 632A.D. was influential in this matter.   This Cathedral was once the home of 1500 monks.
